Which Tikal Tour? Sunrise, Sunset, Full Day, Fly-In or Private

Every Tikal tour is one of five formats, and the format decides more about your day than the operator does. It sets your alarm, your hours in the park, and whether you pay the park again at the gate. Below, the five are compared on those figures, then matched to the traveller each one suits.

What are you choosing between?

Five formats cover every tour that reaches the ruins.

• Sunrise tours leave Flores around 3:00am so you are inside the park in the 04:00–06:00 sunrise window and on Temple IV as the sky lightens.
• Sunset tours start around the middle of the day, walk the ruins in the afternoon, and stay past the 18:00 close for the 18:00–20:00 sunset window.
• Daytime tours run inside the regular 06:00–18:00 opening, often from an 8:00am pickup.
• Fly-in day trips collect you in Guatemala City or Antigua before dawn, fly you to Flores and back, and give you about four hours at the ruins.
• Private tours put your party alone in the vehicle with its own guide, by day or at sunrise.

The ruins are the same on all of them. What changes is the hour you see them, how long you stay, and what you pay on top.

How do the formats compare?

Compare the time in the park first. The length of the day tells you little: the longest day on sale is 17 hours door to door, and four of those are at the ruins.

Every fare is per person. The Tikal Expedition sunrise day at $230 needs at least two travellers to run.

Sunrise or sunset: which should you pick?

Pick sunrise if the dawn is the reason you are going. You climb Temple IV in the dark, wait at the top above the canopy, and hear the forest start up before you see it. Birding is at its best at first light. By mid-morning you are back among the plazas.

Pick sunset if you cannot face a 3:00am alarm, or if you start in Belize. The sunset tours walk the ruins in the afternoon, then stay on after the park closes to the public at 18:00. The walk back is in the dark, so you carry a torch.

One thing to know before you choose sunset: from about October to February the sun goes down before 18:00, when the sunset window opens. A winter sunset visit is a dusk visit. Is a sunrise tour worth the 3am start?

For most people who make it, yes, but it helps to know what you are buying. Nobody can promise a clear sky. The weather decides what you see from the top, and a cloudy morning is still a morning in the forest at its most active.

What a sunrise tour always gets you is the park before the day crowd, the cool hours before the heat, and a guide at your side. The park makes that guide compulsory for anyone entering before 06:00. You also pay the Q100 sunrise ticket on top of the Q150 entrance, unless your fare already includes both.

The Gem Trips sunrise, from $98, adds breakfast at the top of Temple IV and lunch, in a group of nine at most. It rates 5 from 376 reviews. The Mayan World sunrise, from $48, is the lowest fare to the dawn and gives you about seven hours in the park. It leaves both tickets for you to buy before the day. What does a daytime tour give you instead?

More ruins in better light, at a normal hour. A daytime tour walks the whole centre: the Great Plaza with Temples I and II, the North Acropolis, the Central Acropolis, the Lost World, Temple V and Temple IV. You see the carved stelae and the plazas in full daylight rather than by torch.

The Gem Trips full day, from $85, gives you about four and a half hours at the monuments with a group of nine at most. It adds the Plaza of the Seven Temples, which many shorter visits skip. The Mayan World all-inclusive day, from $78, gives you four and a half hours of guided stops and a long lunch at the park restaurant. Its fare includes the park ticket.

The trade-off is heat. From March to May the middle of the day is hot and humid. A morning start helps. So does a refillable bottle, since single-use plastic is not allowed in the archaeological zone.

Do you want the park ticket inside the fare?

This is the one line that changes the real price of a tour. Some fares include the Q150 park ticket, and some leave it for you to buy. Each card says which.

If your fare excludes it, you pay Q150 per foreign adult on top, and Q250 at sunrise or sunset once the Q100 special ticket is added. You buy it in advance online, at any Bantrab bank branch in Guatemala, or in cash at the Bantrab window at the park's outer gate. For a sunrise visit, buy it before the day: that window is reported to open at 6:00am, two hours after sunrise entry begins.

A fare with the ticket inside takes that job off your hands. A fare without it can still be the better buy if you are happy to sort the ticket out yourself. The ticket prices guide sets every fare against what you still pay at the park.

Private or small group: what does the extra money buy?

Pace and a pickup time you set. The Maya Adventure private day, from $209 a person, collects you from your Flores hotel at 8:00am. You get your own vehicle and guide, about five hours at the temples and plazas, lunch and the park ticket.

A small group is not a crowd. The Gem Trips tours cap the group at nine, and the Mayan World tours at fifteen. On a small-group tour you still get a guide who knows the forest, lunch on most fares, and pickup across Flores, Santa Elena, San Benito, San Andrés, San José and El Remate. When does flying in from Guatemala City make sense?

When you have one day and you are starting in the capital or in Antigua. By road, Tikal is about 484 km from Guatemala City, which the ministry puts at nine hours each way. By air it is a day trip.

The Guatemalan Adventure day from Guatemala City, from $448, collects you at 4:15am for a 5:45am flight to Flores, gives you about four hours at Temples I, II and IV with lunch, and flies you back at 5:30pm. The Antigua version, from $465, collects you at 3:40am and runs to about 17 hours. Both include the flights, the park ticket and lunch.

Both are non-refundable, with a change fee. If your dates may move, a night in Flores and a refundable tour from there is the safer plan. Tours from Guatemala City compares the fly-in days in full.

Can you start from Belize?

Yes. The Gem Trips sunset and full-day tours sell pickups in San Ignacio, Belize, and at the Belize western border. The fare rises with the pickup point you choose, so the From price is the lowest option. San Ignacio is about 114 km from the park by road.

Bring your passport for the border, and cash for the exit fee Belize charges at the land border. The Gem Trips sunrise tour does not collect from Belize, which is one more reason sunset suits a Belize start. Tours from Belize walks you through the crossing. What do all the tours have in common?

More than the prices suggest. Every fare is per person, and every tour sells both English- and Spanish-guided departures. Most collect you from your hotel, and most include lunch. Children under 10 enter the park free on all of them.

Most refund in full if you cancel up to 24 hours before the start. The fly-in days are the exception: they are non-refundable, with a change fee. The park ticket itself never refunds, whether it sits inside a fare or you buy it yourself.

The rules inside the park are the same on every tour, too. You climb only the structures opened for it, by their wooden stairs. You carry no food or single-use plastic into the archaeological zone, and nobody flies a drone. Your guide knows the rules; a refillable bottle is the one thing to remember yourself.

How do you read a Tikal listing before you book?

• Find the ticket line. Park ticket included, or extra, and at sunrise or sunset whether the Q100 special ticket is in too.
• Check the time in the park. Four hours on the fly-ins, seven on the long sunrise days.
• Check where it starts. Flores, El Remate, San Ignacio, the airport, or a hotel in Guatemala City or Antigua.
• Check the refund terms. Most refund in full up to 24 hours ahead; the fly-ins do not refund at all.
• Check what is left out. Tips, drinks, and on some sunrise and sunset fares a torch or breakfast.
