Best Time to Visit Tikal: Dry Season, Rains, Heat and the Sunrise

There is no bad month to see Tikal, only different trade-offs. The season decides how wet the paths are, how hot the plazas get and, at sunrise and sunset, whether the sun is on the horizon when you are there to see it. Here is what each season changes, so you can match the month to the visit you want. The month-by-month figures live on the Tikal weather page; this guide is about the decision. When is the best time to visit Tikal?

February to April, if you want the least rain. Those months average fewer than five rain days each at Flores, the nearest weather station. The trade-off is heat: by April the average high is close to 36 °C.

November to January is the cooler option. It is a little wetter than February–April but drier than the summer, and the days are milder. If rain does not worry you, the wet months are greener, and the ruins are the same.

Whatever the month, the best time of day is the morning. It is cooler, the wildlife is the birds are at their most active, and in the wet season the rain tends to come later.

What are Tikal's seasons?

The ministry describes two: less rain from about November to April, and more rain from about May to October, "especially in the afternoons". Heat adds a third: the late dry season, when the rain has not yet arrived and the temperature peaks.

The figures are Flores airport's, about 43 km from the ruins; no weather station at Tikal publishes its own. The ministry itself gives a range of 24–35 °C with high humidity.

Is the dry season the best time?

For dry paths and clear afternoons, yes. February to April is when you are least likely to be rained on. The wooden stairs and the stone steps are at their least slippery, and a full day in the park is easier to plan.

Book a tour a few days ahead in those months and around Holy Week. The ticket can be bought up to 30 days ahead online. If you are going for sunrise, buy it before the day in any season.

How hot does Tikal get?

Hot enough to plan around from March to May. At Flores the average high climbs past 33 °C in March and reaches about 36 °C in April and May. The humidity of the forest makes it feel hotter, and the middle of the day is the hardest time to walk.

In those months, do the long walks early. Sunrise tours and early daytime tours reach Temple IV and the Lost World before the heat builds. Carry a refillable bottle, since single-use plastic is not allowed in the archaeological zone. Wear a hat and sun protection, and take the walk at your own pace.

What is the rainy season like at Tikal?

Wetter, greener and still very visitable. From about May to October it rains more, and mostly in the afternoons. June and September to October are the wettest months, each averaging more than 210 mm at Flores.

The ministry warns that some surfaces get slippery in the wet months. Wear shoes with grip, go slowly on the stairs, and pack a light rain jacket. Plan the ruins for the morning and keep the afternoon loose. Because the rain comes mostly in the afternoons, a sunset visit is the special visit more likely to meet it in these months.

Does hurricane season matter?

A little. The Atlantic hurricane season runs from 1 June to 30 November. Tikal lies inland in Petén, but the season runs through its wettest months.

Keep your plans flexible in those months. Most tour fares refund in full if you cancel up to 24 hours ahead, which gives you room to move a day. What time is sunrise at Tikal through the year?

It moves by about an hour. Guatemala keeps no daylight saving, so the clock never jumps.

What does a winter sunrise mean for you?

A longer wait in the dark. The sunrise entry window runs about 04:00 to 06:00, so you are already on Temple IV when the sky begins to lighten. In December and January the sun comes up around 06:30, so you sit at the top for longer before it appears.

That wait is part of the visit: the forest wakes around you in the dark, and birding is at its best at first light. Bring a warm layer for the pre-dawn hour, a torch for the walk in, and patience. In summer the sun is up soon after 05:30, and the wait is short.

Nobody can promise a clear sky on the day. The ministry says only that the weather affects visibility. A sunrise tour in the drier months gives you the better odds, and the guide and the forest make the morning worth it either way.

Why is a winter sunset visit a dusk visit?

Because the sun sets before the sunset window opens. The sunset entry runs about 18:00 to 20:00. From about October to February the sun is already down before 18:00, so you are in the park for the dusk and the dark, not the sun on the horizon.

The walk back to the vehicle is in the dark, so carry a torch; some sunset fares leave the lantern out. If you want the sun itself in those months, take a sunrise visit instead. If you simply cannot face a 3:00am start, the daytime tours cover the same ground in full light. From about March to September, a sunset visit does catch the sun going down.

When is the wildlife and birding best?

At first light, in any season. The forest is most active at dawn, which is the case for a sunrise tour or a night in one of the park hotels. From October to April, North American migrants join the resident birds, including up to 35 kinds of wood-warbler.

In March and early April the males of the ocellated turkey display, often by the Visitor Centre car park. Spider monkeys and Yucatán black howler monkeys are there all year, and so are the coatis. Nature and wildlife at Tikal covers what you are likely to see.

Which tour suits which season?

The same tour can be a different trip in a different month. Three examples show how.

• The Gem Trips sunset, from $91, walks the south and east of the city in the afternoon. From about March to September it stays for the sun going down; from October to February it stays for the dusk. In the wet months the afternoon is when the rain tends to come.
• The Tikal Expedition sunrise, from $230, leaves Flores at 3:00am and gives you about seven hours in the park. In winter you wait longer on Temple IV for a later dawn; in summer the sun is up soon after you arrive. The sunrise and park tickets are in the fare.
• The fly-in day from Antigua, from $465, puts you in the park for about four hours in the middle of the day. In April and May that is the hottest stretch, so pack for the heat. It is non-refundable, which matters most in hurricane season.

Does Holy Week or Christmas change anything?

The park stays open. It opens every day of the year, 06:00 to 18:00, including Christmas, New Year and Holy Week, barring force majeure.

Around Holy Week and in the dry season, book your tour a few days ahead and buy the park ticket online before you travel. The ticket is valid for 30 days after purchase, so you can buy it once your dates are fixed.

What should you pack for each season?

• November to January: a warm layer for a sunrise, a torch for a sunset that ends in the dark.
• February to May: a hat, sun protection and a refillable bottle; the heat builds to its peak in April and May.
• June to October: a light rain jacket and shoes with grip for the slippery surfaces.
