Jose knew his subject in depth, had a good sense of humour and answered every question, and he made sure we had a good place to wait for the sunrise. The group was small, which we valued all the more as we passed groups of 20 or 30. Cookies and coffee came first, then a hot traditional breakfast in the park and lunch afterwards. Cloud hid the sun itself, but hearing the jungle wake up made the early start worth it.

We came to Tikal with friends and five children between us, and our guide made room for all of them, down to our four-year-old, who named him the mysterious man. He brought good food for the whole day and took the children to a few special stops that turned out to be their highlight. We saw spider and howler monkeys and learned about the toucans.

Watching the ruins of Tikal appear out of the forest at dawn, with parrots and toucans calling, is a morning I will not forget. Once the tour got going, the guide shared a lot about the ruins and the wildlife. The start was the weak part: he came late, left the queue and the ticket window for us to puzzle out, and walked far ahead of us in the dark. It improved a great deal after sunrise.

My advice is to take a regular daytime tour, because for me the sunrise was not worth the early start and the shorter time in the park. We were at lunch by 10am. The guide's English was very good, but he was so keen on birds that at times it felt like a birding tour, and I heard less history than I wanted. For photographs, the light was better when I went back on my own in the afternoon.

My friend and I thought the pace was right and learned a great deal, including short stories about how the temples of Tikal came to be. Jose was friendly and funny even at that hour. Fog covered the sunrise, but we stayed at the viewpoint after the other visitors had gone, snacking, listening and watching the colourful birds, and starting so early kept us ahead of the heat.

I climbed several of the pyramids while my wife and daughter mostly waited below, and the tour handled both choices well. Watching the sun set over Tikal from the top of a pyramid, with the jungle sounding all round, was the best part, and we saw toucans, bat falcons and golden orioles. Two small criticisms: almost two hours for lunch on arrival was too long, and a few torches for the return walk would have been welcome, because night fell fast on uneven ground.

On the company's advice I had bought my Tikal park entrance and sunset passes online in advance, while others on my shuttle had to buy theirs in person, a detour of a good half hour. My airport shuttle to the Jungle Lodge ran late, and Marlon and Jose waited for me and stowed my luggage before we set off. Lunch at the Jaguar Inn is part of the price, and Jose had good suggestions on Guatemalan dishes.

Eighteen years ago we climbed the stone steps themselves; now every open temple has wooden stairs, which are less steep and made the top easier to reach.

A long day, planned and run well from start to finish, and Herbert was knowledgeable and patient with our group. There is plenty of walking, but it is mostly flat and the steps come in short runs. Antigua was my base, and I was not leaving Guatemala until I had seen Tikal, so I did it in one day: up at 3:00am for the 3:40 shuttle, the flight to Flores, a shuttle to the park, and the reverse in the evening. I was worn out by the time I reached Antigua at 8:30pm, and in hindsight a night in Flores might have been wiser. The guide spoke excellent English and often led us along forest paths between the ruins, which are spread out, so anyone who struggles to walk should bear that in mind.

I messaged the company the day before to check the pickup and got an answer straight away. The minibus from Flores was full and a little cramped, and the drive took just over an hour. Buy your Tikal entrance ticket and the separate sunrise ticket in advance, because there is no phone signal in the park, and bring a torch for the brisk 40-minute walk to Temple IV. From the top we saw the sunrise and heard the howler monkeys wake.

Our flight was three hours late, and the tour already knew from the flight details and had rearranged everything. Antonio collected us at the airport with water, stopped for lunch on the way and walked up with us to be sure we met our guide at Tikal. The guide was knowledgeable, and afterwards Antonio drove us to our hotel and helped us check in.
