This is the channel question: do you need a tour at all? For a daytime visit, often not. Below is what going alone involves, from the ticket to the gate to the walk. You also see what a tour adds, so you can decide which half of the day you want to organise yourself. The fares, when you want them, are compared on Tikal National Park Tours.

Can you visit Tikal without a tour?

Yes. In the regular hours, 06:00 to 18:00 every day of the year, you can walk the site on your own without a guide. The park is open on holidays too, including Christmas, New Year and Holy Week.

What you need is a park ticket, a way to get there, and your passport. The Great Plaza is about 1.3 km on foot by path from the Visitor Centre. A guide is optional by day; hire one if you want the history and the wildlife explained as you walk.

When is a guide compulsory?

Before 06:00 and after 18:00. The sunrise entry runs about 04:00 to 06:00, and the sunset entry about 18:00 to 20:00. For both, the park requires three things: the regular park ticket, the sunrise or sunset ticket, and a guide authorised and identified by INGUAT, Guatemala's tourism institute.

The special tickets do not include a guide. You hire one yourself, at the park entrance or through an authorised tour operator. Without that guide you are not let in during either window.

How do you buy the ticket yourself?

There are three official ways, and no ticket office at the ruins.

  • Online at boletos.culturaguate.gob.gt, the Ministry of Culture and Sports' platform, up to 30 days ahead. You pay by Visa or Mastercard, and the ticket arrives by email as a PDF. Foreign cards pay a 2.30% surcharge.
  • At any Bantrab branch in Guatemala, in cash. Branches include Guatemala City, Antigua, Santa Elena and Melchor de Mencos.
  • At the Bantrab window at the park's outer gate, in cash. It is the only way to pay on site.

Banrural no longer sells Tikal tickets; that arrangement ended on 17 January 2025. If a hotel or blog tells you to go to Banrural, go to Bantrab or buy online instead.

Going for sunrise? Buy the park ticket and the sunrise ticket before the day. The gate's Bantrab window is reported to open at 6:00am, two hours after sunrise entry begins. Visiting Tikal has the full detail.

What do you show at the gate?

The ticket PDF, printed or on your phone, and your passport or ID. Staff check both and give you a wristband, which you wear where it can be seen all day. Screenshots, bank receipts and card slips are refused.

Download the PDF before you leave Flores. Phone and internet signal inside the park is weak or absent, and the gate is about 17 km before the Visitor Centre.

A ticket is valid for up to 30 days after you buy it, whatever date it shows. Once it is scanned at the gate, it is used up for that day. It is never refunded.

How do you get there from Flores?

Collective and private minibuses run from Flores every day. The park is about 64 km away, roughly an hour to an hour and a quarter. Ask your hotel in Flores for the current departure times.

If you drive, take the CA-13 towards Melchor de Mencos, turn left at Aldea Ixlú towards El Remate, and continue to the park. The ticket check is at the outer gate. From there it is about 17 km more to the Visitor Centre, where the ruins begin.

El Remate, on the lake, is about 34 km from the park. Staying there puts you half an hour closer. The three park hotels by the Visitor Centre put you ten minutes from the Great Plaza. The map of the park shows the gate, the Visitor Centre and the ruins.

How do you get to Flores in the first place?

From Guatemala City, fly or take the bus. Mundo Maya International Airport, five minutes from Flores island, has flights from Guatemala City by Avianca and TAG Airlines, about an hour. The ministry names Autobuses del Norte, Fuentes del Norte and Línea Dorada for the bus; by road the capital is about 484 km away.

From Belize, San Ignacio is about 114 km from the park by road, through the border at Melchor de Mencos. Carry your passport, and cash for the exit fee Belize charges at the land border. Tours from Belize handle the crossing for you.

Can you hire a guide at the gate?

Yes. The ministry names the park entrance as one of the two places to hire an authorised guide; the other is a tour operator. By day a guide is your choice. At sunrise and sunset one is compulsory.

The park publishes no guide rates. Agree the price, the route and the length of the walk before you set off. Ask to see the INGUAT identification: for sunrise or sunset, only an authorised guide gets you in.

Can you watch the sunrise without a tour?

Not on your own. You can do it without booking a tour, but not without a guide. You need the Q150 park ticket, the Q100 sunrise ticket and an INGUAT-authorised guide, and you need to reach the gate before 06:00.

In practice that means buying both tickets before the day, arranging a guide in advance, and getting to the park by about 4:00am. From Flores that is a 3:00am start. Sleeping in a park hotel makes it easier. A sunrise tour does all of it in one booking: the pickup, the guide and, on some fares, the tickets. The Mayan World sunrise, from $48, is the lowest fare; it leaves both tickets for you to buy.

There are no senior, student, disability or group discounts; the prices are set by law. A foreigner who buys a national ticket is refused entry.

Can you stay in the park on your own?

Yes. Jungle Lodge, Tikal Inn and Jaguar Inn stand beside the Visitor Centre, about a ten-minute walk from the Great Plaza. Jaguar Inn also has tents and a camping site, and the park sells its own camping ticket, Q50 for foreign visitors on top of the park ticket.

A night inside is the easiest way to do a sunrise without a tour. You skip the 3:00am drive, and you can meet an authorised guide at the Visitor Centre before dawn. You still need a park ticket to pass the gate on the way in, and a new one for each day at the ruins.

A day on your own, in order

  • The day before: buy the ticket online, download the PDF, and pack your passport.
  • Flores: take a collective or private minibus to the park, about an hour to an hour and a quarter.
  • The outer gate: show the PDF and your ID, and put on the wristband.
  • The Visitor Centre: about 17 km on. Hire a guide here if you want one.
  • The Great Plaza: about 1.3 km on foot, then out to Temple IV and the Lost World.
  • The museums: back by the Visitor Centre, open 08:00–16:00.
  • Before 18:00: out of the ruins, when the park closes to day visitors.

What does a tour add?

Three things. Transport, which matters most for a 3:00am sunrise. A guide, who is compulsory at sunrise and sunset and useful at any hour for the history and the wildlife. And, on some fares, the park ticket, so there is nothing to buy before the day.

Most tours add lunch too, and some add pickups from Belize. The Gem Trips sunset, from $91, collects you anywhere from Flores to San Ignacio and stays in the park past closing time. The fly-in day from Guatemala City, from $448, adds the flights, the ticket and lunch.

Who should go alone, and who should book?

Go alone if these sound like you:

  • You are staying in Flores, El Remate or a park hotel, and the daytime ruins are enough.
  • You like to set your own pace, and you are happy to buy the ticket online first.
  • You would rather hire a guide at the gate than join a group.

Book a tour if these do:

  • You want the sunrise or the sunset, when a guide is compulsory.
  • You would rather not arrange a 3:00am ride.
  • You are coming from Belize, or have one day from Guatemala City.
  • You want the ticket in the fare and nothing to organise.

What should you bring, and what can you not bring in?

Bring walking shoes, a refillable bottle, sun protection, insect repellent, a light rain jacket, and a torch for sunrise or sunset. Food and single-use plastic are not allowed in the archaeological zone, so eat at the Uaxactún car park, the camping area or Rancho Tikal.

Drones are banned. Climb only the structures opened for it, by their wooden stairs, and never a roof comb. Do not feed the wildlife, and keep to the marked routes. Walking, climbing and heat covers the physical side of a day on foot.
