Private vs Group Tikal Tours: What the Extra Money Buys
The short answer. A small-group day costs from $85 a person with nine people at most. The private day from Flores costs $209 a person, with your group alone and the park entrance in the fare. The gap is smaller than it looks, because the small-group fares leave out the park ticket: Q150 for a foreign visitor, and Q250 with the sunrise fee. What the extra money buys is a later start, your own pace and a guide who answers only to you.
At most sites, "private or group" is a question about company. At Tikal it is also a question about the ticket, because the park sells its own admission and some fares include it while others do not. Compare the two formats on price alone and you compare the wrong numbers. Here is how to read them. What does a small group give you?
The best-reviewed Tikal days run in small groups. Gem Trips caps its sunrise, sunset and full-day tours at nine people, which means you can hear the guide at every stop.
These fares include more than you might expect. The sunrise tour, from $98, takes you up Temple IV before dawn, serves breakfast at the top and adds lunch later. The full day, from $85, includes lunch, a Tikal map and mosquito repellent. Both collect you from hotels in Flores, Santa Elena, San Benito, San Andrés, San José, El Remate or the park's own hotels.
What they do not include is the park ticket. You pay it yourself, before the day or at the gate. The fare also varies with the pickup point you choose, so the price you see is the lowest option.
What does the private day give you?
Maya Adventure Travel's day from Flores is the fare that lists private transportation among its inclusions. You are collected from your hotel lobby at 8:00am, drive about 90 minutes to the park, and spend about five hours at the temples and plazas.
The fare includes lunch, entrance fees and taxes, an air-conditioned vehicle and mosquito repellent. You pay separately for tips for the guide and driver and for soft drinks. If your hotel is outside Flores, expect an extra transport fee.
The route covers the Great Plaza, Temple I and the Central Acropolis, Temple II, the Lost World and Temple IV. It is the same ground a group day covers. The difference is who sets the pace.
Read the ticket line before the price. Check whether the park ticket is in the fare before you book. A foreign adult adds Q150 to any fare that leaves it out, or Q250 for a sunrise visit. Children under 10 enter free.

Every price is per person. All of these cancel free up to 24 hours before the start. The park ticket itself is never refundable.
How does the ticket change the sum?
Take a foreign couple on a daytime visit. On the small-group full day you pay $85 each, then Q150 each at the park. On the private day you pay $209 each and nothing more at the gate.
At sunrise the gap narrows again. The small-group sunrise is $98 each plus Q250 each for the entrance and sunrise tickets. The extended sunrise day from Flores or El Remate is $230 each with both tickets in the fare, and it needs at least two of you to book. Put your own exchange rate on the quetzal figures and the real gap appears.
What does pace mean inside the park?
Tikal is spread out. The Great Plaza is about 1.3 km on foot from the Visitor Centre, and Temple IV is about 700 m further west in a straight line, more by the paths. Add the Lost World and Temple V and a visit becomes a long walk in the heat.
The ministry gives average temperatures of 24–35 °C with high humidity, and some surfaces turn slippery in the rainy months. In a group you keep the group's pace. Private or group at sunrise?
Sunrise works differently. Entry runs about 04:00 to 06:00, and the park requires three things: the entrance ticket, the sunrise ticket and a guide authorised by INGUAT, the national tourism institute. Every sunrise tour supplies the guide. What you choose is the group around you.

Who should book a group tour?
- Travellers who want the lowest fare and do not mind paying the ticket separately.
- Anyone who wants breakfast on Temple IV at sunrise.
- Solo travellers who would like company on the trail.
- Visitors coming from Belize, since the small-group sunset and full-day tours sell pickups in San Ignacio and at the western border.
Who should book the private day?
- Families who want to set their own pace; strollers and infant seats are listed.
- Anyone who walks slowly or wants to rest in the shade without holding others up.
- Travellers who would rather start at 8:00am than 3:00am.
- Anyone who wants the ticket paid and nothing to buy at the gate.
