By road, Guatemala City is about 484 km from Tikal, some nine hours each way. The flight to Flores takes an hour. That is the whole case for this trip: it turns an overnight journey into a day.
Your day starts with a 4:15am pickup at most Guatemala City hotels. The flight leaves at 5:45am and lands in Flores at 6:45am. A vehicle then takes you on to the park, about an hour's drive. You spend about four hours guided at the ruins, stop for lunch, and fly out at 5:30pm. You land back in the capital at 6:30pm, and the driver takes you to your hotel.
Landing at 6:45am means you miss the sunrise window, which closes at 06:00. What you get instead is the daytime park with a guide who knows which temples fit into four hours. Allow about 15 hours door to door, and keep the evening light. Flight times may vary with the airline, so check your confirmation the day before. The Antigua version of this day starts at 3:40am, runs about 17 hours and costs $465; the fly-in day trips set the two side by side.
Four hours is enough for the heart of Tikal when a guide sets the route. You start on the Great Plaza, the centre of the ancient city. Temple I, the Temple of the Great Jaguar, rises about 45 metres on its east side. It stands over the tomb of Jasaw Chan K'awiil, the king who defeated Calakmul in 695, and was raised after his death.
Temple II, about 38 metres high, faces it across the plaza. Visitors currently climb Temple II by wooden stairs at the back, and from the top you look straight across at Temple I. The North Acropolis, the royal burial ground, closes the plaza to the north. The palaces of the Central Acropolis run along the south side.
Then you walk west to Temple IV, the tallest structure at Tikal, some 70 metres from the plaza floor to the top of its roof comb. Its wooden staircase takes you above the canopy, where the temple tops of the city stand out of the forest. The park can close a staircase for repairs, as it did at Temple IV on 7–8 April 2025.
This fare is non-refundable. If you cancel, you get no money back. If you change the booking, you pay a change fee.
So book it once your Guatemala City dates are fixed, and not before. If your plans may move, your own flight to Flores and a tour from there give you room, because most tours from Flores refund in full up to 24 hours ahead. The sunrise wildlife tour is one of them, and it adds the sunrise this day cannot reach.
The same goes for the park ticket inside your fare. Tikal tickets are never refunded, whoever buys them.
The driver collects you at 4:15am from most Guatemala City hotels and brings you back after the 6:30pm landing. Give your hotel's name when you book, so the pickup is confirmed. If you are staying outside the usual area, ask the operator before you pay.
In Flores you land at Mundo Maya International Airport, five minutes from the island. From there the drive to the park takes about an hour. The airport, the town and the park are on the Tikal map.

Eighteen years ago we climbed the stone steps themselves; now every open temple has wooden stairs, which are less steep and made the top easier to reach.

A long day, planned and run well from start to finish, and Herbert was knowledgeable and patient with our group. There is plenty of walking, but it is mostly flat and the steps come in short runs. I went at the end of May, when afternoon rain is possible, but we had finished by two; bring sunscreen and a hat. At the airport the domestic entrance is easy to miss, so leave time to find it.
